Tips from the kitchen

  • The riper the bananas, the sweeter and more flavorful the shake. Those almost-black ones on the counter are exactly what you want here.
  • Freeze the banana chunks for an hour before blending if you want a thicker, colder shake without watering it down with extra ice.
  • Three tablespoons of ice cream sounds like nothing, but it does the job. The banana carries most of the body. Don't double it expecting a creamier result, it just makes it sweeter.
  • Blend for a full 30 to 40 seconds. A quick blitz leaves tiny banana fibers in there that feel stringy. Keep going until it looks completely smooth.
  • Serve it the moment you pour it. It separates fast and gets foamy on top if it sits, and there's no fixing that once it happens.

Ways to vary it

  • A spoonful of peanut butter blended in works well if you want something a bit more filling. It thickens the shake noticeably, so you might add a splash more milk.
  • Swap the milk for oat milk or almond milk. The shake turns out slightly thinner but still works fine, and the banana flavor comes through just as much.
  • A small handful of frozen strawberries or mango chunks added to the blender gives you a fruit-forward version. Keep the rest of the recipe the same.

Storage & leftovers

This is best drunk straight away. If you have leftovers, pour them into a sealed jar and refrigerate for up to a day, but shake or stir well before drinking because it separates. Freezing it turns the texture grainy and watery once thawed, so it's not worth it.

What to serve with it

Good alongside a plate of waffles or pancakes for a weekend breakfast. Also works as an after-school snack next to a few plain cookies.
