Halloween Fruit Figures - dessert, kids recipe

Halloween Fruit Figures

Fun and slightly healthier Halloween treat — cut spooky shapes from melon and serve with a "bloody" white chocolate dip. Kids love it.

Instructions

  1. 1

Warm the cream in a small saucepan, then pull it off the heat. Break the white chocolate into small pieces and drop them into the hot cream. Let it sit until the chocolate has melted, then stir in the red food colouring.

  2. 2

Slice the melon and use cookie cutters to press out spooky shapes. Put them in a bowl together with the raspberries and strawberries.

Tips from the kitchen

  • The white chocolate dip can seize up if the cream isn't hot enough when you add the chocolate. Pull it off the heat, wait about 30 seconds, then add the chocolate pieces. That residual heat is usually enough to melt them smoothly.
  • Cookie cutters work best on melon slices that are about 1.5 cm thick. Too thin and the shapes fall apart, too thick and the cutter won't press all the way through cleanly.
  • Stir the red food colouring in gradually. Two teaspoons gives a deep red, but you can stop earlier if you want more of a pink blush. Once it's in, you can't take it back.
  • Pat the melon shapes dry with a paper towel before arranging them. Melon releases a lot of water and it will thin out your dip if it pools at the bottom of the bowl.

Ways to vary it

  • You can swap the honeydew for watermelon if you want the shapes to look more naturally spooky and red. The flesh is firmer so the cookie cutters press through even more cleanly.
  • If you want to skip the food colouring, a spoonful of raspberry jam stirred into the finished dip gives it a pinkish tint and a slightly sharper flavour.
  • For older kids or adults, a tiny pinch of chilli flakes stirred into the dip before serving adds a little heat that works surprisingly well with the white chocolate and fruit.

Storage & leftovers

The dip keeps in the fridge for up to 2 days in a sealed jar. It will firm up when cold, so just set it in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes and stir before serving. The cut melon is best eaten the same day as it gets watery fast, and the berries will keep overnight but are softer by the next morning.

What to serve with it

This works well on a Halloween party table alongside other finger foods like popcorn or pretzels. The dip also doubles as a sauce for plain crackers if you need to stretch it a bit further.
