Tips from the kitchen

  • Stir the cocoa in thoroughly while the oats are still loose. It tends to clump if you wait, so break up any dry pockets before the lid goes on.
  • Quick-cook oats soak up the milk fast. If you like it thinner, add a splash more milk in the morning before you stir.
  • Keep the quark and raspberries off until you serve. Layered in early, the quark goes runny and the berries bleed pink into the oats.
  • Use a jar with a tight lid and shake it instead of stirring if you're short on time. Just make sure no dry cocoa sits at the bottom.
  • If the raspberries are very tart, mash one or two into the oats and leave the rest whole on top.

Ways to vary it

  • Swap the raspberries for sliced banana or a handful of blueberries if that's what you have.
  • A spoon of peanut butter stirred in with the cocoa makes it taste a bit like a chocolate-peanut cup. Optional, but my kids ask for it.
  • Top with a few chopped hazelnuts or a sprinkle of cacao nibs for some crunch against the soft oats.

Storage & leftovers

Keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days in a sealed jar, though the oats get softer each day. Don't freeze it, the texture turns grainy once thawed. Eat it cold straight from the fridge, no reheating needed.

What to serve with it

A cup of coffee or a glass of cold milk is all it needs. If you want it more like dessert, serve it after dinner with an extra spoon of quark.
